Lecture by Andreas Stefansson: ”THE QUEST FOR DEVELOPMENT IN AFGHANISTAN”

Synopsis: After 9/11, the international community intervened, toppled the Taliban regime, and launched a large-scale reconstruction effort aimed at promoting stability, state-building, and development. Twenty years later, the Taliban have returned to power, now governing a country quite different from their previous rule. Today, Afghanistan is internationally isolated amid rising geopolitical tensions, while its population faces a double burden of a protracted humanitarian crisis and an increasingly repressive regime. What lessons can be drawn from the reconstruction efforts? What can the international community do today to support development in Afghanistan?
