The seminar will cover the historical and political background to the present situation in Afghanistan. Historically how the country since centuries has been characterised by a struggle between traditionalism and modernism, and politically how the western involvement, led by USA, between 2001 and 2021 resulted in the Taliban take-over in August 2021. Finally, the present Taliban rule and the international community’s response will be analysed, particularly in its consequences for the Afghan people.
